5th EDITION STREET SCIENCE FESTIVAL ON JULY 13TH, 14TH & 15TH IN ROTTERDAM

From Friday the 13th until Sunday the 15th of July, HipHopHuis and 45 Live present the fifth edition of the international hiphop festival Street Science in various locations in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Street Science’s program is based on different states of expression, rooted in hip hop culture: music and dance take on a special position, next to life style, fashion and street art. This year’s theme ‘kinship’ is the main vein running through the program. Tickets for the festival are now for sale.

Theme: kinship
The multidisciplinary program of the festival is connected through a theme. Previous themes like emancipation, generation and commercialisation were highlighted in panel discussions, theatre performances and expositions. In 2012 international artists and local icons find each other through the theme ‘kinship’: familystructures and groups are important during this year’s Street Science. An example of this is a ‘crew’: members of a dance-, graffiti-, or music group who are heavily involved with each other and very similar to families.

Program selection
A selection from Street Science 2012’s program. (NB: this might vary as it is still developing)

World Bboy Classic
The international breakdance championship World Bboy Classic has grown out to be an exciting event. The organisation invites 16 top BBoys from all over the world (like USA, Mexico, Venezuela and more) which are put together in eight random duo’s one hour before the final. They will battle against eight challengers duo’s who have won the qualification battles earlier that day. World Bboy Classic is held on Saturday the 14th of July in De Nieuwe Oogst/Maassilo. The finals start at 8 pm.

Beat M Up ft Cookin’ Soul & Mecca:83
Beat M Up has held two successful beatbattles at Street Science. For this special editon Beat M Up adds an extra dimension to this popular battle through the combination of their own concept with live elements (instruments and vocalists). Europe’s best hip hop production team Cookin’ Soul (SP) and ‘beattechnician’ Mecca:83 from Manchester judge during this battle.

The Gully District
Ever since Dave La Chappel’s film ‘Rize’ about Krumping hit the scene, this style of expression has developed itself into a worldwide movement. Michael ‘Ques’ Zaalman plays an important role in bringing Krumping to the forefront in Rotterdam. As Holland Street Kingdom’s leader Ques is the Dutch representative of this scene, while traveling through Europe to judge battles and give masterclasses. His classes in HipHopHuis are always full. His own event ‘The Gully District’ is one of Street Science’s eye-catchers. Ques expects a lot of international competitors. Krumpers J-Tight (USA) and Kid Eyez (GER) are invited to judge ‘The Gully District’. J-Tight will share his knowledge in a Krumping masterclass.

Photo exposition
Photographers from Rotterdam who also have a foot inside of the hip hop scene open their own exposition about kinship. One of the photographers is Menno Van Gorp, one of Holland’s best bboys. During his travels around the world he discovered the power of photography. This exposition is his first and is in cooperation with De Nieuwe Oogst.

Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke – Jilian Mayer
Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke is a modern Miami adaptation of the 1962 French short film La Jetee, and recounts Luther Campbell’s (Uncle Luke of 2 Live Crew) rise to fame and fight for First Amendment rights. Director Jillian Mayer will be at the screening of this film and will induldge in a panel with filmmakers afterwards.
