A BRIEF HISTORY OF B-BOYING

Born in the Bronx in the 1970s, B-Boying, alongside graffiti artistry, rapping and DJing, is one of the four elements of hip-hop. Back then, hip-hop was not the million-dollar industry is it today. It was a creativity spawned from oppression. When unemployment was rife and crime was high, hip-hop and B-Boying became something for people to aim for, a means in which to better yourself and keep off the streets. This is still true today. It can be seen in the back streets of ‘developing countries’: a one-on-one dance-off – where respect may be the only reward the competitors ever receive. But, for those who excel, it could be a means of escape.

THE CAST OF BREAK’N REALITY

LILOU, real name Ali Ramdani, is the most popular B-Boy in the world. The only two-time world champion winner of Red Bull BC One, he’s toured with Madonna and even been featured as a character in the PlayStation game B-Boy. In Break’n Reality, we see how tough it is to survive at the top.

ROXRITE, real name Omar O. Delgado Macias, is the Obi Wan of B-Boying. A master in the four elements of hip-hop, his goal is to become the Tony Hawks of breakdancing. To build on his legacy, Roxrite aims to educate the next generation of B-Boys. In Break’n Reality, we enter his classrooms, workshops and lectures to watch his teachings.

NEGUIN, real name Fabiano Carvalho Lopes, is hip-hop personified. Blessed with boundless optimism and enthusiasm, he won the 2010 Red Bull BC One championship, practises house and hip-hop dance, DJs at private parties and draws in the graffiti style. Who better to divulge hip-hop’s true meaning?
